Greetings from New York!
I hope everyone’s enjoying a great summer. I’m working on two projects in New York and I’d love to have you come see my work if you’re in town.
The first is a free, public reading of my play HEARTBREAK/INDIA, which I began writing five (yikes!) years ago and wrote in pieces in Seoul, New York, and London. I never got to complete a draft until I went on a fellowship to New Delhi, India in 2008. Since then, I’ve developed the play in New York, rewritten it in Brazil, and finally come to a version that finally makes me happy. The reading will be part of Youngblood’s 2010 BLOODWORKS, a festival of new play readings, and will take place on June 24th at 7 PM at the Schaberle Studio of Pace University. My second project is a new creative excursion–a dance/theater piece called THE DIAMOND TRADE. This is my first venture directing and working with dancers and a choreographer, and I’m thrilled to present an excerpt of the play at La Mama Moves! Dance Festival on Thursday, June 17th and Saturday, June 19th at 8 PM. This presentation is the culmination of five months of really fascinating rehearsals and workshops in which I’ve developed the text and movements in collaboration with a multi-cultural, all-female ensemble of actresses and dancers. This is the first public performance of this new work-in-progress, which I’ll finish writing starting this November while in residency at Sanskriti Pratisthan in New Delhi, India, with support of a 2010 UNESCO-Aschberg award.

HEARTBREAK/INDIA
HEARTBREAK/INDIA tells the story of ONE, a high-ranking UN diplomat who falls in love with his Korean-Chilean-American intern, “X, Y, Z.” As their common love for power and politics intensifies, ONE decides to end his marriage with his Korean-Chilean-American wife “A,B,C,” putting in jeopardy a new UN framework for world peace.
HEARTBREAK/INDIA was written with support of a 2008 Artist Fellowship at the Global Arts Village in New Delhi, India; was part of Ma-Yi Theater Writer Lab’s LABFEST III in New York (2009), is currently under attachment with the Soho Theater in London. This play is based on true international affairs (of the heart).

THE DIAMOND TRADE
THE DIAMOND TRADE is based on the mysterious history of the Kooh-I-Noor, an Indian diamond stolen by the English East India Company and split up into affordable, little pieces. The story is set in modern times and explores the lives of seven women from around the world, who now wear pieces of the Kooh-I-Noor.
As a global economic breakdown ensues, world currency falls flat and diamonds become the new financial reserve. People start hunting down diamonds and through the lives of a Brazilian supermodel, a Qatari princess, a Korean professor, a Chilean housewife, a French senator, an American widow, and an Indian goddess, we piece together how the Kooh-I-Noor is reassembled after centuries being torn apart.
